How NeighborWorks Green Bay Uses Donations To Help The Community
This property on North Oakland Avenue, in the historic Fort Howard neighborhood, is a great example of how your real estate donation to NeighborWorks Green Bay can make a difference in our neighborhoods. The property owner was struggling to manage the property from a distance and wasn’t able to maintain the property to community standards. The City of Green Bay identified a number of issues that had to be addressed, and the owner turned to NeighborWorks Green Bay for help. She wanted to give the property to us, but hoped that we would keep the long-time tenants, who were understandably concerned they might be asked to leave their home.
NeighborWorks Green Bay staff met with the tenants and developed a scope of work for the property. The owner completed the gift and we began to renovate the home, including both interior and exterior improvements, and utilized high school volunteers to magnify the impact of the gift. We were able to mobilize the resources (capital, connections, and expertise) needed to not only bring the property back to the minimum community standards, but to improve the property making great place to live. Ultimately, we hope to sell the house to the tenants who have made it their home.
This project is a perfect example of how NeighborWorks Green Bay is positioned to remove the burden of ownership from struggling investors and families, mobilize community resources to improve the quality of housing, educate and empower volunteers, and improve the lives of area residents.
